Introduction
The D-dimer test measures D-dimer, a protein fragment released when blood clots break down. Normally, levels are very low or undetectable, but they rise with significant clot formation and dissolution. An elevated D-dimer result may indicate a clotting disorder like deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism (PE), but it does not confirm a specific condition or clot location. Since levels can also increase due to infection, inflammation, or surgery, the test is most effective when combined with clinical evaluation and imaging. Widely used in emergency and clinical settings, D-dimer testing provides a quick, non-invasive method to assess thrombotic risk and assist in ruling out serious clotting disorders.
